Journalism Club Orientation Seminar, 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Saturday August 12th, 2006, on Campus at Multnomah Bible College, Portland, Oregon

Sorry, but our Journalism Boot Camp had to be postponed until next summer due to low registration. We were too late in getting the word out. Registration fees will be returned in full to all who have pre registered.  Sorry for the disappointment.

Join us on the campus of Multnomah Bible College, in beautiful Portland, Oregon, Saturday, August 12, 2006 for our 2006 Orientation Seminar. Home school students, ages 12 to 20, along with all club advisors/parents are invited to attend.

Time: 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Multnomah Bible College, Portland, OR, 97220
We will meet in the A-Frame building at the Northeast corner of the Campus.

Seminar Faculty will include:

Professor Ann Staatz brings to NACHJC's Journalism Boot Camp years of experience as Assistant Editor for Solo magazine and Art Director for Virtue magazine. But most important, she brings her love for Jesus Christ and her commitment to live for Him. Professor Staatz teaches journalism at Multnomah Bible College, a position she has held for 18 years. She has also served as President of the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators.


Jim Allison
has been a professional graphic designer for more than 20 years and has been responsible for the design and production of a wide variety of printed materials, from concept through printing, bindery, and distribution. He has designed materials for a variety of clients including The Luis Palau Evangelistic Association, Freightliner, Multnomah Bible College, George Fox University, Western States Chiropractic College, Pacific University, and many others. Is is the owner of Thot Communications.

Gregg Harris is a Christian home school father, conference speaker and now founding Director of the National Association of Christian Home School Journalism Clubs. He brings a wealth of vision and enthusiasm to the topic of journalism.  He will serve as Host for our Orientation Seminar and help to train and motivate parents to be Club Advisors and home school students to become effective "watch-dog journalists."

What to Bring to the Club Orientation Seminar:
1. Bring a 3 ring Notebook, pen and paper for taking notes and keeping handouts.
2. Bring a Spiral Pocket Notebook or Moleskin for use in interviews and reporting
3. Bring a cooler or picnic basket full of food and beverages for your family & friends to share during our Picnic in the Park

 
 

Optional But Advisable Tools & Resources:
The following will be used in Journalism Club assignments & activities during the Orientation Seminar and throughout the home-school year:

1. A lap-top computer for use in web research, writing, lay-out, design & photography and web publishing activities.
2. Recommended Software: Adobe InDesign Suite (or InDesign & Photoshop), MicroSoft Word, Macromedia Contribute & Quickbooks (Note: Educational discounts on software may be available to registered home school students.)
3. Photographers: A digital camera and Photoshop for use in photojournalism.
4. Graphic Artists: Sketch pad, pencils and ink pens for illustration & cartooning

 


Journalism Club's Orientation Seminar

 

Our Journalism Club's Orientation Seminar will provide a fun and effective way for students ages 12-20 to learn how to do “Christian worldview, free press, watchdog journalism.” It will also help Club Advisors learn how to organize and run a successful Journalism Club Chapter in their town. The Seminar will run from 9 A.M. to 3, P.M. Mon. - Sat. Then, the Christian Home-school Journalism Clubs that are launched from the Orientation Seminar will begin publishing a club newspaper in print and on-line, throughout the 06-07 home-school year.

  • Vancouver/Portland Group Spring Semester

    We are happy to announce the start of the Spring 07 Semester. This Spring, they are testing out if a student run club will do better then a Editor run club. This semester is fully dedicated to sharpening students without the distraction of the newspaper that is usually printed.
